Adding GPS/IMU Sensor Data to Off-Road Vehicle CAN Bus
Case Studies / Concordia Baja Racing
Concordia Baja Racing
Concordia Baja Racing is a team of engineering students who design, build, and race a single-seated off-road vehicle, which are tested to near destruction.
What problem did you solve?
We need to collect dynamic data from our vehicle to analyse its performance in comparison to its theoretical calculations and expected behaviour.
How did you solve it?
We use a PEAK converter to extract our data, then we used SavvyCan to interpret and analyse it via exported CSV files. In this setup, the CANmod.gps allowed us to track our vehicle's movements and correlate them to its location, allowing us to map out its performance throughout the tracks.
"The data from the CANmod.gps was invaluable to the performance and tuning of the vehicle!"
What benefit has this led to?
The CANmod.gps allows us to find the vehicle's limits under different conditions and compare it to our theoretical data, helping us in improving our design for future iterations. We were able to gather data for our transmission, suspension, and brakes subsystems, allowing us to fine-tune these subsystems to be tailored for different types of events in competitions such as acceleration, suspension and traction, manoeuvrability, and more.
Why did you choose the CANmod.gps?
We chose this device as it is small and light, which is perfect for our application as we aim to reduce as much weight as possible on the Baja. The combination of the GPS and IMU in one device helps in validating our data collected as we can cross-reference the data points. The configuration tools also allow us to tailor the device to our application and to minimise noise due to vibrations.
